NZ jewellery store flooded with emails after Royal
Published: 8:57AM Monday April 07, 2014 Source: ONE News
A New Zealand jewellery designer and her business partner say they have been inundated with inquiries after the Duchess of Cambridge requested four of their pieces to potentially wear on the Royal tour.
Designer Victoria Taylor and Kirstin O'Brien from Wellington-based jewellers Tory and Ko were asked to supply three pairs of earrings and a necklace for Catherine.
Tory and Ko were recommended by Ms Taylor's sister, New York based fashion designer Rebecca Taylor, who has previously dressed the Duchess.
Ms O'Brien told TV ONE's Breakfast that they followed Rebecca's recommendation up with Kensington Palace.
"The palace came back straight away to us and said they loved our jewellery and they would like to select some pieces.
"They were very specific about the pieces they wanted and that made us quite delighted because they chose some wonderful pieces from two different collections."
She says it is "very exciting", and says they have been "inundated with emails from all over the world", with people asking for a pair of earrings that the Duchess may wear.
Catherine chose two sets of earrings from their Pretty Collection. One pair is in citrine with a gold bow and sea pearl, costing $695, and the other is in blue topaz.
Ms Taylor says she designed the pieces a few years ago and says they were based on a Victorian Royal motif.
Catherine's aides also chose a pair of pearl and diamond white gold earrings, costing $2900, and a matching 18k necklace at $1500. Ms Taylor says they are a "great classic combination."
It's not the first time Catherine has worn the work of a Kiwi designer. The Duchess wowed in a stunning canary yellow coat by Kiwi Emilia Wickstead when she was eight months pregnant.
And Vira Tavioni, who manages Tav Pacific in Mt Eden in Auckland, received calls from Dubai, the United States and Europe after Catherine was photographed wearing a Tav printed dress while on tour in the Solomon Islands.
The Duchess and Duke of Cambridge and their son Prince George are expected to arrive in Wellington at around 11.45am today.

PRESS RELEASE: November 20th 2012:
PUTTING A SPARKLE INTO CHRISTMAS DAY....
THIS YEAR TORY & KO. JEWELLERS ARE HELPING DONATE TO WOMEN'S REFUGE NEW ZEALAND
There are over 250 women and children on any one night in the 44 Refuges across New Zealand over the Christmas period. While Christmas is a happy time for most, the women and children who find themselves in the safety of a Women’s Refuge safe-house have been subject to violence and are scared and alone.
Co-founders of TORY & KO. Jewellers: Victoria Taylor and Kirstin O’Brien - both mothers of small children - feel strongly about giving back to the community and when they heard of the situation over Christmas for a lot of mothers and children they decided to make a difference by appealing to their family, friends and clientele for assistance.
TORY & KO’s MISSION: To provide a Xmas gift for every child at a Women’s Refuge shelter this year.
“We are thrilled and very touched by TORY & KO’s kind assistance.” said Kiri Hannifin, Women’s Refuge National Office Spokeswoman. “It’s really tough for kids in Refuge at anytime, but Xmas is especially hard and it’s so nice to be able to help make Xmas kind of normal. Most of them come in with only the clothes they are wearing so a little gift means heaps.”
Kirstin O’Brien from TORY & KO. commented: “When Tory & I heard about the plight of many women and children in N.Z. Women’s Refuges at Christmas we wanted to help in some small way. All we hope is that a present for every child in a safe-house on Christmas day will bring a smile and let them know that people care.”
Bring in a child's gift to the TORY & KO. store (upstairs beside the florist, Mezzanine Floor in the Old Bank Arcade, 233 -237 Lambton Quay, Wellington or courier to the same address) and they will package it in a white bag with a pink or blue ribbon.
Your efforts will be rewarded: select from the little parcels on their Xmas tree - some of which have a TORY & KO. surprise in them for you!
Victoria and Kirstin’s goal is to provide 200+ children's presents to the national branches of the Women's Refuge to be distributed appropriately on Christmas Day. They will also be providing a substantial amount of gifts to the cause.
They hope that all these gifts will provide a little smile on the faces of the children and their mothers on Christmas Day.
They would love your help!

2008: Dom Post article on the "Pretty Collection":
“As an avid collector of vintage jewellery, many of Victoria’s pieces, which include pretty little moonstone and diamond earrings, dazzling pink sapphire rings, mesmerising black pearl pendants and princess like tiaras, have been inspired by antique designs.
Her exquisite work has proved so popular that it has been commissioned by designers Cynthia Rowley and Rebecca Taylor for shows at New York Fashion Week, hung around the necks of top models including Amber Valetta, seen on the catwalks at New Zealand Fashion week and in the pages of greek vogue, it has even been worn by Hollywood starlet Robin Tunney in the film Paparazzi.
Living in middle earth at the hub of the New Zealand film industry, Victoria was called upon to supply jewellery for Richard Taylors wife Tania Rodgers to wear on the famous red carpet at the 2004 oscars ceremony.
“I enjoy being able to collaborate with other creative people and work on exciting projects. Working with my sister has been a lot of fun. For the show she just had at New York Fashion Week I designed strings of oyster, white, pink and beige fresh water pearls that were intertwined with moonstones and tied together with ribbons to go along with the underwater theme she had.”
“I’m really excited about being able to introduce more people to my jewellery. It’s very different from what most people expect from New Zealand jewellers. I’m a big fan of anything sparkly and girly and I love the idea of creating timeless pieces that make you feel wonderful every day and that you never grow tired of wearing.”
